Safety & Compliance

Safety and Compliance is so important to the club that we have dedicated a whole section on this website to it. Indeed, compared to many other clubs, we have many rules in place but it is for this reason why we have been able to fly in Canungra for over 25 years, whilst still maintaining our core sites and a good safety record. 

Whether a visiting member of a full time member, we encourage to peruse these pages and familiarise yourself with these rules to avoid disappointment, as we want to maintain minimal disruption to the local community, we want to maintain our high safety record and you going home safely after an epic flight, and we absolutely don't want to lose any of our sites.

Please be aware that in addition to the Safety and Compliance pages on this site, each individual launch site (Tamborine, Beechmont, Hincliffe's and Flying Fox) have their own additional safety notes. Please visit the pages before flying there.

It is up to you as pilot-in-command to establish the most up-to-date legal requirements for flying. This includes but is not limited to Airspace and HGFA restrictions.

Safety

  • It is mandatory to fly with a UHF radio at any of the CHGC sites. If you do not have one, please contact a local instructor whom maybe able to loan you one.

  • We use continuous tone coded squelch (CTCSS) when transmitting and fly on the following channels;

    Paragliding - CH 18 (frequency 476.8500) (97.4 CTCSS)
    Hanggliding - CH 19 (frequenct 476.8750) (97.4 CTCSS)

  • If you are a paraglider pilot and have a Restricted HGFA rating and flying off Tamborine, then there must be a Safety Officer on launch to guide you. If you are a hangglider pilot and have a Restricted HGFA rating, then you do not need a Safety Officer, but must have at least an Advanced pilot on launch to guide you.   • If you are a paraglider pilot or hangglider pilot and have a Restricted HGFA rating and flying at any CHGC site other than Tamborine, then you do not need to have a Safety Officer on launch, but do need to have at least an Advance pilot to guide you. Visit the General Site Rules page for clarification.

  • For your own safety, if you are a Restricted rated pilot, please ensure that you have a red streamer attached to your hangglider king post or paraglider harness when flying.

  • The following has been lifted directly from the HGFA Operations Manual please read the latest up-to-date (as this may change at any time) copy on the Operations Manual on Privileges and Limitations;

    Privileges and Limitations
    A Supervised Pilot Certificate authorises the holder to act as Pilot-In-Command of a paraglider subject to:
    (f) the aircraft type for which the Supervised pilot certificate is issued;
    (g) sites where operations are directly supervised by a Duty Pilot, or Safety Officer and under conditions considered by a Duty Pilot, or Safety Officer to be suitable for Supervised Pilots;
    (h) Any limitations imposed by a Duty Pilot, Safety Officer, or the owner of the site and/or the Safety Committee of the Club that control operations at the site;
    (i) Operations being limited to within 25 nautical miles of the place at which the pilot launched;
    (j) The pilot in command having performed three flights within the preceding 90 days, in an aircraft of the type being used;
    (k) Limitations specified within the HGFA Operations Manual and relevant legislation; and
    (l) When so directed by a Duty Pilot, or Safety Officer, a holder of a Supervised Pilot Certificate when acting as pilot-in-command shall attach a red streamer at least one metre long to the risers of the paraglider.
    (m) If for any reason, a Supervised Pilot Certificate holder has been unable to perform three flights, in an aircraft of the type being used within the preceding 90 days, he/she is to undergo a check flight under the direct supervision of an appropriate HGFA Instructor or Senior Safety Officer.


  • When registering to join the club, where possible, we ask you to provide a mobile number in case we need to contact you at a time of an emergency.

  • No acrobatics within a cylinder of 300m radius around any CHGC launch.

  • Powered operations are prohibited at all CHGC launches.

  • CHGC sites are relatively demanding to fly with conditions changing seasonally, please make certain you are sufficiently rated, experienced and briefed about the current status before flying.

Compliance

  • You must be a member of the HGFA to fly at any CHGC site.

  • You must be a member (visiting or full) to fly at any CHGC site.

  • Please read the CHGC Code of Conduct, located on this website before flying.

  • As a visiting pilot you must fly a site only in the presence of Full CHGC members.

  • Be aware of Airspace restrictions in the area, as well as military restrictions. Visit the Online Maps section of this site for more information. The status of Amberley Military Airspace can be accessed by calling 07 5361 3581 (ATIS/AWIS, automated service - also on VHF 316.2). Oakey airspace info: 07 4577 7235 (ATIS/AWIS).

  • We have a definitive list of areas where pilots can and cannot land. It is essential that we adhere to this list in order to minimise disruption to local landowners. We have come close to losing our sites because of short-landings. When this occurs, we are forced to shut down our sites or restrict who can and cannot fly. So please be wary of your glide in all conditions, taking into account headwind as well as thermic sink cycles.

    We have an Online Maps page on this website on where you can and cannot land. Please familiarise youself with it. Each Launch site page also has additional images on landing areas.

  • When on the radio, please be professional and avoid chit-chat. Remember that there are others in the air who may be struggling down low and perhaps not so appreciative of talking on the radio, while struggling to hear their vario. General radio etiquette is to keep it short and to the point. Who you are, where you are and your intentions. No swearing and no idle chatter, please.

Standard Operating Procedures for a Safety Incident

Safety is everyone's responsibility.

Before a safety incident occurs, every member has a duty of care to fellow pilots to guide safety concern to prevent and avoid any safety incident. 

For example: Get on the radio; "Hey buddy, you look a little low from here. Risk landing short. You better start heading out to a safe landing option."

If you can witness a safety incident, you have earlier the opportunity to take action to prevent it, and guide safety for everyones benefit. In a minority sport activity we have to stick together and support one another.

 

To ensure everyone's safety and minimise the risk of losing any of our sites, the CHGC enforces a landing-short Three Strike Rule. If you land in a No-Landing area the following consequences apply.

Please take note of the procedure you MUST follow, should you have a short landing at any of the CHGC sites and the consequences involved with short landings and not following procedure:

Three Strike Rule.

1st Safety Infringement- Incident Report within 7 days OR $50 fine:
You can avoid a fine by completing online form "Report a Safety Incident" OR emailing your respective SSO (Ken Hill – HG, Phil Hystek or Brandon O’Donnell – PG) within one week to explain your decisions that lead to this error. You can use the Report an Incident form on this website to do so.

2nd Safety Infringement in 12 months - written incident report to relevant SSO and a $50 fine paid to the club.
Mandatory one-off payment.

Note: if you do not report this short landing but you reported your first and this one is witnessed and reported by another member/s, you will receive a 2 month ban from flying CHGC sites

3rd Safety Infringement in 12 months - 2 month ban from flying CHGC sites.
If within 12 months of the first infringement, then a 2 month ban from all CHGC site during which time the pilot should seek further training/advice from a SSO or instructor.

 
As we all treasure the sites that we fly and, I am sure, all hope to be flying them for many years to come as well as preserving them for those that follow us in the future. Those that witness a short landing can report it with an incident report or email to the relevant SSO.
"Report an Incident" is a complete online Incident report on CHGC website. Or you may email to the relevant SSO, your own incident report which should include the following:
 
  • Full name
  • HGFA number
  • Pilot Rating
  • Date of short landing
  • Site
  • Time of landing (approximate is fine)
  • Explanation of why you believe you landed short
  • How you will attempt to ensure that this does not happen again
  • Supervising SO or supervising pilot if you are PG2, PG3 or a Supervised Rated Hang Glider
